Message from CSR Officer

We have consistently maintained our philosophy of steadily expanding job opportunities and thus fulfilling our social responsibilities through the promulgation of products and technologies with excellent environmental performance and a sustainable growth.
We became fully active with our CSR promotion programs by issuing the "CSR Charter" in April 2008. We also established CSR Committee, a company-wide organization, and started to introduce an international standard-based CSR management system to our major overseas sites/offices. The CSR promotion system was fully established when the introduction was completed in FY2010. The establishment of the system motivated our employees to proactively participate in CSRpromotion programs, a typical example of which is the "Book Kiss" campaign, which consists of the donating of books written in the local languages to overseas elementary schools.
Last year, we created a mid-term CSR vision, which covers up to FY2015, and established a roadmap on issues that the society is highly interested in: "CSR procurement," "conservation of biological diversity," and "expansion of areas to be covered by CSR." Overall directions are decided by the CSR Committee, followed by each site's/office's efforts to tackle and solve these issues. Thus, we will continue our social contributions, while trying to become a company essential to the society.

CSR Committee's Vision

In June 2010, CSR Committee established a mid-term vision that covers up to 2015, and discussed how to handle the following three major issues:

1 CSR procurement

Many of our customers audit our sites' CSR. Likewise, we are required to audit our suppliers with regards to CSR. Even though we are having them audit themselves in place of an audit by us, we will make sure that our sites will train their employees to become CSR auditors and be able to perform such audit.

2 Biological diversity conservation

The trend is on the rise to act not to reduce the number of species in order to use biological resources sustainably. In FY2010, Nidec established and publicly announced our conservation policy in accordance with public guidelines, based on which we will take systematic actions gradually.

3 Expand the area of responsibility

Currently, Nidec has two CSR-related organizations: "CSR Committee," which covers our business sites, and "CSR Network," which mainly covers eight affiliated companies. We will increase the number of member companies to "CSR Network" to improve its quality, and integrate and unify it with "CSR Committee."

CSR Promotion System

Nidec established a new CSR system in April 2008: We established a CSR Committee under the supervision of the Board of Directors, and established a CSR Promotion Office, which is a dedicated CSR organization to work as a CSR secretariat. The CSR Committee, which consists of a chairperson appointed by the Board of Directors and members selected from among employees, deliberates action policies, annual plans, and other important matters, and makes decisions.

Based on these decisions, CSR Promotion Office launches the according actions, collaborating with the CSR Promotion Leaders of domestic and overseas sites.

In addition, to further promote the CSR activities of the entire Nidec Group, we established independently from CSR Committee the "CSR Network," consisting mainly of eight listed affiliated companies, in November 2010, followed by the first meeting among the members in December to exchange and share information on each other's issues and activities.

CSR Management System

To establish and stably operate the CSR system, Nidec has established the framework of an according management system and introduced it to the individual sites/offices where it is being operated.

Basic ideas

Based on international standards, and to launch constant CSR programs, Nidec introduces and operates its CSR management system at its individual sites/offices.

In addition to the requirements of international standards, ISO14001 (for environmental management systems) and OHSAS18001 (for labor, safety, and hygiene management systems), each site/office selects human rights, labor, and ethical behavior-related requirements from among the EICC (Electronic Industry Code of Conduct), which our major customers are members of, and describes relevant elements in a manual, considering the characteristic of the region where the site/office operates.

The CSR management system has been introduced to, and is in use at, our six sites/offices in China, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, our major production sites.

These efforts have led us to perform CSR programs successfully, thus improving our corporate value.

Process management

The CSR management system, which is based on applicable international management system standards, utilizes the PDCA cycle, which is said to be the basic management principle, and constantly manages and improves the entire process, from the policy and objective setting to the management review.

Objectives and results of Nidec's CSR promotion activities

Examples for CSR activities

Book Kiss ♥ Campaign

In FY2010, we collaborated with a Public Interest Incorporated Association, Plan Japan, and launched the "Book Kiss ♥ Campaign" to donate books written in a local language to overseas elementary schools.
Nidec's overseas sites collected books read by their employees and their families, while Plan Japan contacted each country's supported regions, decided where to donate the books, and these countries' Plan Secretariats delivered the books to local elementary schools. Thanks to the cooperation among each of these organizations, a total of 3,085 books were collected and donated to the elementary schools in the supported regions.

Participation in Plan Sponsorship

As part of our international activities for social contribution, we have been participating in the Plan Sponsorship promoted by Plan Japan*, a public interest incorporated association, since 2008.
This activity sees its goal in the community development of developing countries, and Nidec has been supporting the improvement of living conditions of children in such nations through continuous donations and exchanges with the children. The activity is being implemented with the local residents as main actors to enable self-reliance of the communities.
Currently, 40 Nidec employees working inside Japan or in overseas sites are conducting letter exchanges with 40 children representing local communities in the four countries China, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Until now, 161 letters have been written as a reply to 157 letters from the children.
In June 2011, the Srisaket area in Thailand was able to achieve self-reliance as result of the improvement in living conditions due to the activities. Nidec is now supporting again through Plan the activities in a Thailand region that continues to require local development support.
We will continue to cooperate with Plan Japan and support the regional development and improvement of living conditions in developing countries.
